Can Stress Lead to Cancer

Stress is a killer and is implicated in several fatal conditions including high blood pressure and heart attacks. Now scientists have biological confirmation that common daily stress could cause cancer. A medical advice from an expert would be the best way to clarify any doubts over this issue.

A recent study by Yale University School of Medicine and Fudan University in China shows that stress causes signals to be sent to mutant genes that make them cancerous. The study concluded on 2 genes often involved in human cancers, one being RAS which is connected with 30% of cancers and the other being -scribble’ which lets cancer to build up when it’s imperfect.

Neither gene could cause cancer by itself. However, stress causes signaling proteins to travel amid the mutant cells causing tumors to grow and spread. Prior to this study which for the first time revealed that there was communication between cells initiated by stress, scientists believed that mutations had to occur within the individual cell for tumors to develop.

The study involved fruit flies, but in the paper published the scientists pointed out that the same signaling pathways exist in humans. They also wrote that alike co-operative mechanisms could have a role in the development of human cancers.

As per Tian Xu, a study leader and geneticist at Yale a lot of diverse conditions could cause stress signaling such as emotional, physical stress, inflammation and infections. Luckily, you could take some steps in order to manage stress. They are:

o Learning and practicing relaxation techniques o Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep o Eating a healthy diet and keeping a positive attitude o Learning to manage your time efficiently

Significant Effect on Immune System

As per the National Cancer Institute, factors such as social isolation, death of a spouse and medical school examinations modify the way the immune system functions. Genetic mutations occur inside your cells daily as you are exposed to several tumor causing agents in the environment. Generally, the DNA is able to repair any damage, but there are times when it’s not able to do so.

Your body’s immune system has the capacity to take over and take care of these abnormal cells before they become a cancer. A weak immune system is one of the pessimistic physiological effects of stress. Cancer advice would be a better option before proceeding with the treatmen

There IS an Alternative Treatment for Cancer!

Cancer has got to be one of the most scariest words these days. Just the thought sends shivers down my spine. It’s scary because we’re all told there is no cure and conventional medicine can only prolong life, often for only a few months. But what if you were told there are other possibilities that may effectively kill cancer? Wouldn’t you like to know?

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant and an essential nutrient. Vitamin C isn’t stored in your body so you need to top it up daily. Most people think citrus fruits are a good source but in actual fact you’ll find far more in guavas, broccoli, dark leafy greens, capsicum and kiwis. Vitamin C is involved in all kinds of crucial health aspects. When taken in high doses, it will:

Form a protein that develops tissue, ligaments, blood vessels. Maintain cartilage, skin and bones. Helps to heal wounds through the production of collagen. Assist in overall brain health (needed to make certain neurotransmitters like serotonin). Block free radicals (free radicals are responsible for the aging process and may be linked to diseases, including cancer)

When I’m talking high doses, I’m talking grams not milligrams. The reason you may find vitamin C isn’t effective is because you haven’t taken enough. You might end up with diahorrea but that’s about it. Vitamin C for common illnesses is a whole new topic I could go into. If you’re interested just leave a comment.

What Does Vitamin C Have To Do With Cancer?

Studies have shown that treatment using high doses of vitamin C given in high doses may actually improve the lives of terminal cancer patients by prolonging their life and decreasing the severity of their symptoms. A team of researchers from the University of Kansas reported that vitamin C effectively eradicates cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact1. At high levels, vitamin C is toxic to cancer cells. There are many skeptics as this is not yet considered conventional medicine. It’s considered alternative medicine but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. I thought it would be best to illustrate with a couple case studies and you can make the judgement call yourself.

Case Study 1: Resolution of Lung Masses

A 52-year old woman had kidney cancer which required doctors to remove her left kidney. No metastases (spread of cancer from one organ to another) were found at the time of the operation. One year later, a chest x-ray showed four masses in her lungs and one month later, there were eight in total.

She began ascorbic acid treatment the following month. She started with a dose of 15g, and increased her dosage to 65g after two weeks. Her dosage was administered through IV twice per week. She was also consuming other vitamins and fish oil. She continued this treatment for seven months. At that point an x-ray revealed that seven of the eight masses were gone and the eighth had been reduced in size. She carried on with oral treatment and continued to live well with no further progression2.

Case Study Two: Terminal Cancer Patients

One hundred terminal cancer patients were treated with vitamin C. Each patient received 10g per day through IV for ten days. After this patients continued to take vitamin C orally. When compared to 1000 control patients from the same hospital, the vitamin C treated patients lived 300 days longer on average. This is a good case study because the sample size was fairly high and there were controls put in place to compare3.

With the technological advancements we have today I don’t believe we still haven’t found a cure for cancer. I believe we know the answer and the answer lies in our food. But too many industries rely on the sick to survive and of course we can’t kill off the sickness industry! Hippocrates knew this centuries ago when he said -Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food-.

I wonder what else we know but allowed ignorance to blind us.. Feel free to comment!

Stay Tuned.. Next week I’ll reveal why bread is the new junk food.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer
Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, just above your collarbone. It makes hormones that help the body work normally. Anyone can get cancer of the thyroid gland. But certain factors may increase the risk. These include
* Being between ages 25 and 65
* Being a woman
* Being Asian
* Having a family member who has had thyroid disease
* Having radiation treatments to your head or neck
You should see a doctor if you have a lump or swelling in your neck. Your doctor can order tests to see if you have cancer and, if so, which type. Treatment depends on the type and how far the cancer has spread. They include surgery, radioactive iodine, hormone treatment, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Some patients receive a combination of treatments.

Thyroid Cancer Symptoms
Some of the symptoms that may point to thyroid cancer include the
following: –

* A lump, or nodule in the neck — especially in the front of the neck, in the area of the Adam’s apple. (Note: Sometimes, the lump or nodule will be growing quickly.) (Find out how to do a Thyroid Neck Check to look for lumps or enlargement.)
* Enlargement of the neck
* Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
* Hoarseness, difficulty speaking normally, voice changes
* Difficulty swallowing, or a choking feeling
* Difficulty breathing
* Pain in the neck or throat, including pain from the neck to the ears
* Sensitivity in the neck — discomfort with neckties, turtlenecks, scarves, necklaces

* Persistent or chronic cough not due to allergies or illness

* Asymmetry in the thyroid (big nodule on one side, nothing on the other)

* Nodules that when manipulated give the impression that the entire thyroid is moving (this is often a sign of an aggressive cancer)

* Nodules that cause the wind pipe to go to one side of the neck, as well as cause superior vena cava syndrome

* Some particularly aggressive thyroid tumors can go to the brain and cause neurological symptoms

Types of thyroid cancer
The type of thyroid cancer determines treatment and prognosis. Types of thyroid cancer include: –
* Papillary thyroid cancer. The papillary type of thyroid cancer is the most common, making up about 80 percent of all thyroid cancer diagnoses. Papillary thyroid cancer can occur at any age, but is most commonly diagnosed in people ages 30 to 50.

* Follicular thyroid cancer. Follicular thyroid cancer also includes Hurthle cell cancer. Follicular thyroid cancer typically occurs in people older than 50.

* Medullary thyroid cancer. Medullary thyroid cancer may be associated with inherited genetic syndromes that include tumors in other glands. Most medullary thyroid cancers are sporadic, meaning they aren’t associated with inherited genetic syndromes.

* Anaplastic thyroid cancer. The anaplastic type of thyroid cancer is very rare, aggressive and very difficult to treat. Anaplastic thyroid cancer typically occurs in people age 60 or older.

* Thyroid lymphoma. Thyroid lymphoma begins in the immune system cells in the thyroid. Thyroid lymphoma is very rare. It occurs most often in adults age 70 or older.

Risk factors
Factors that may increase the risk of thyroid cancer include: –
* Exposure to high levels of radiation. Examples of high levels of radiation include those that come from radiation treatment to the head and neck and from fallout from nuclear accidents or weapons testing.
* Personal or family history of goiter. Goiter is a noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid.

* Certain inherited genetic syndromes. Genetic syndromes that increase the risk of thyroid cancer include familial medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia and familial adenomatous polyposis.

Exams and Tests
The diagnosis of thyroid cancer is usually established by examination of cells obtained from a fine-needle aspiration biopsy or a surgical biopsy of a thyroid nodule.

In a fine-needle aspiration biopsy, a thin needle is inserted through the skin into the thyroid nodule and cells are withdrawn into a syringe and sent to the laboratory for analysis by a pathologist.

Blood tests are generally not useful in determining whether a particular thyroid nodule is cancerous. Most patients with thyroid cancer have normal blood levels of thyroid hormones, including a thyrotropin (TSH) level.

Thyroid Cancer Treatment
Surgery to remove all cancer in the neck and any cancerous lymph nodes is the initial therapy for most thyroid cancers. Complications are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced thyroid surgeon.

Radioactive Iodine
Radioactive Iodine using I-131 is typically used as a follow-up to surgery, or “adjuvant” treatment in papillary and follicular thyroid cancers. This treatment is usually given two to six weeks following thyroid surgery. It involves giving high doses of I-131 in a liquid or pill form. Patients undergoing this treatment must restrict their dietary intake of iodine for approximately five to14 days before the treatment and must restrict their contact with children and pregnant women for three to seven days after treatment. The goals of this treatment include destruction of any remaining thyroid tissue in the neck, a reduction in cancer recurrence rate, and improved survival.

Radiation treatment, known as external-beam radiation therapy, is used in patients with cancer that cannot be treated with surgery or is unresponsive to radioactive iodine, as well as for older patients with cancer that has distant spread. Radiation is sometimes combined with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is sometimes useful for progressive diseases unresponsive to radioactive iodine or radiation.

Clinical trials
Clinical trials are studies of new cancer treatments or new ways of using existing treatments. Enrolling in a clinical trial gives you the chance to try out the latest in cancer treatment options, but clinical trials can’t guarantee a cure. Ask your doctor whether you might be eligible to enroll in a clinical trial. Together you can discuss the benefits and risks of a trial and decide whether participating in a clinical trial is right for you.

Women With Iuds Have Statistically Lower Risk Of Cervical Cancer

At the Institut Catal d’Oncologia in Catalonia, Spain, researchers announced findings that use of the IUD lowers risk of cervical cancer.

The Study examined 26 previous studies involving about 20,000 women from more than a dozen countries who were followed for 10 years. It found that women with a history of Inter Uterine Device Contraception (IUD) have an equal rate of contracting the human papilloma virus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer, but they had only around half the risk of developing the cancer itself.

The scientists think possible explanations for the protective effect of IUDs could be that the process of inserting or removing them destroys pre-cancerous cells, or that it causes some kind of inflammation that prompts a long-lasting immune response and prevents the HPV from progressing.

IUD use is known to reduce endometrial cancer risk. However, the impact of the birth control method on cervical cancer and HPV infection has not been clear until now, researcher Xavier Castellsague, PhD, of Catalonia, Spain’s Institut Castala d’Oncologia reported in an interview with WebMD.

The study is published online The Lancet Oncology.”The good news for IUD users is that this form of birth control does not increase the risk of HPV infection and it appears to lower the risk for developing cervical cancer,” he tells WebMD.

The IUDs is the most widely used reversible method of birth control world wide. However, of the women in the United States who use birth control only about 1% to 2% chooses the IUD. Previous problems in the United States with the Dalkon Shield IUD, the market in 1974, may be the reason. Since 1974 advancements in IUD technology has made it safe and effective, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
