Dr. Robert Lieberson Discusses Most Common Neurosurgeries

Top California neurosurgeon explores common procedures and invasive brain surgeries.

The brain is one of the most important organs in the body, capable of controlling thought, action, and personality. If something goes wrong, the body may become immobile, abilities may be hindered, personality may be altered, or cognition may be hampered. Dr. Robert Lieberson is one of the top neurosurgeons in California, responsible for running his own Bay Area practice. Prior to starting his health center, he built up a struggling neurosurgery practice in Sacramento, CA.

According to the experienced doctor, there are many kinds of invasive and non-invasive procedures performed by a neurosurgeon and their team. His recent comments covered the most common procedures:

Craniotomy

Removing part of the skull for access to the brain is called a craniotomy. Dr. Robert Lieberson says this is sometimes a procedure used for strokes, brain injuries, or other neurological concerns and can be a life-saving procedure.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy

If a troubled disc causes discomfort that cannot be managed by other therapies, it may need removal. This surgical procedure takes the problematic disc out of the neck or back, fusing the surrounding bones together for pain relief.

Epilepsy Neurosurgery

Seizures can become a serious issue for certain patients, says Dr. Robert Lieberson. Epilepsy surgery alters part of the brand that is most affected. This procedure can reduce symptoms and is typically most ideal for candidates that have seizures only in one part of the brain, he says.

Chiari Decompression

In order to widen the foramen magnum and improve balance, a bone may need to be removed from the back of the skull. Dr. Robert Lieberson explains this procedure is typically used to treat Arnold-Chiari malformation, which causes problems with balance and coordination.

Spinal Tap

In some cases, a sample of spinal fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) is taken to determine if there are issues impacting the central nervous system. This could help diagnose (or rule out) leukemia, meningitis and more.

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt

If excessive or fluid pushes on the brain, a device may be used to control the flow and help with drainage. The shunt is placed during surgery and acts automatically to remove the pressure of fluid from the brain.

Spinal Fusion

One of the most common neurosurgical solutions for back pain in aging adults is to reduce the impact of movement on the spine. Degenerative discs are prone to fractures from the most common movements, says Dr. Lieberson. A spinal fusion can help shore up the lumbar areas impacted and offer quick pain relief in many cases.

Microdiscectomy

When abnormal disc material puts pressure on a nerve, it may need to be removed. Dr. Lieberson says the microdiscectomy can relieve the discomfort caused by a herniated disc. This is one of the most popular minimally invasive spinal surgeries for issues like this, says Dr. Lieberson.
